13th November, 2009. 10:54 pm. glen beck and the stupid.

OK so just when you think glen beck's dimwittery has plumbed its ultimate depths? i mean, we all thought it couldnt get any worse than his revelation of the imagery of rockefeller center as centerpieces of communist soviet ideology, right?

You'd think he would have gotten the boot by now, right? Dont, because here's Rupert Murdoch (remember him) defending Beck calling Obama racist against white folks. Or something, I dont even know.

But wait. Remember the shooting at Fort Hood? Remember how it was the same day as the summit Obama called with tribal leaders, 500+ of them in DC? Remember how Obama made remarks about Fort Hood when he was supposed to be making final remarks at the tribal summit? Well according to dude that was a prelude to getting reparations for indians.

No really.

“The first thing that hit me as I was watching television just like you were and I saw President Obama talking about native American rights in the middle of a tragedy at Fort Hood — I couldn’t believe it. I mean, it sounded almost like maybe, possibly, would there be some reparations involved?

And apparently, Obama brought up native people because of something having to do with Van Jones.

..just a coincidence that Obama “brought up Native American rights at such an inappropriate time – and it also just happens to be a pet issue of Jones? Maybe.

I'm not suffering alone, people.

13th November, 2009. 11:06 pm. LJ Idol - Topic 4 - Moments of Devastating Beauty

Beauty slid the silver pin into her hair, humming to herself as she coaxed her dark ebony curls to fall gracefully at her jaw. Pulling away from the glass, she admired the fine woven lace of her bodice. As always, the dress was tailored perfectly. The creamy lace tapered to a dramatic vee, emphasizing her tiny waist, before uniting with the folds of her skirt. The skirt in and of itself was an idol of exhibition. The pale olive silk flowed over the hooped petticoat, the richly embroidered hem elegantly skimming the floor, with hand-stitched petals that seemingly sprung from her feet.

Beauty smiled one last time at her reflection, her heart pacing wildly in her chest. Tonight would be the night. She carefully plucked a rose from the vase adorning her dresser, slid into her beaded slippers, and stepped out into the dark hall.

As she entered the labyrinth of hallways winding up to the north wing, Beauty reflected on her early days at the manor. She cringed, thinking of her awkward arrival. She’d been so angry, wrestling with a maelstrom of emotions, and she’d directed her fury at the Beast. She’d struggled with her father’s abandonment, and fell ill at the thought her sisters’ parting faces. They’d practically pushed her out the cottage, after all. And she was angry long after the Beast explained the misunderstanding -- all over a rose! After contemplating her options, Beauty decided to stay with the Beast willingly; she’d never leave the lower classes if she returned home.

13th November, 2009. 7:19 pm. just a quiet day at work

About the most exciting thing going was doing up the wireless passwords for the next week. For a bit of wild excitement this evening, I'm going to label the "mean" I bottled yesterday, and do the chicken broccoli couscous I didn't have time for yesterday evening.

13th November, 2009. 5:07 pm. Catholic church vs. 10 yr old kid

The DC Catholic Church is saying that if DC legalizes same-sex marriage, they're going to stop feeding poor people, helping the homeless, etc. NOT KIDDING.

THIS is why it is a very very bad idea for government to fund religious groups to do charitable work (take heed, Obama). Because when church and state get intertwined, EVERY TIME the church starts dictating to the state.

But then there's also this awesome kid. I guess there's hope.

13th November, 2009. 5:04 pm. your daily dose of political despair

I haven't talked about the Stupak Amendment yet because it's just so, so depressing.

Even more depressing is how many (predominantly male) "progressive" types are chiding women's rights advocates to put up and shut up because hey, what's the big deal? Even though abortion is the most common surgery there IS?

I mean, it's not like men have to have them, so who cares?

Since the healthcare reform bill passed the House with the Stupak-Pitts amendment intact on Saturday night, feminists have been up in arms about the latest assault on access to abortion, and so-called progressive men have been telling us to calm down and look at the big picture. In other words: same old, same old. In an e-mail, our own Rebecca Traister summed up the ongoing conflict between those who prioritize women's rights and those who see them as a bargaining chip to be traded away as necessary:

This is the argument made over and over again: If the repro rights activists would just stop agitating about the pro-life Dems, we could get majorities, and things would improve for women and men everywhere. I get that argument. Most days, I believe it. And then I wake up to a Democratic majority that will only pass progressive healthcare legislation if it includes antiabortion provisions.

Meanwhile, the "progressive activist groups" won't even MENTION Stupak - they're so busy shouting hooray, we passed a health care bill of some kind! Hello? Shouldn't we be fucking standing up and protesting a bill that defunds abortions and birth control while covering Viagra?? Doesn't it actually matter what's IN the bill?

Why is it that when someone has to get thrown under the bus for the "greater good" it's always women? And here I thought it was McCain who was putting women's health in scare quotes.

There are, btw, a lot of awesome male allies who have been very vocal against Stupak. If only they headed up MoveOn.org.

13th November, 2009. 5:58 pm. Crocheting Like A Madwoman

In the past week I have crocheted two baseball-style caps, ripped back and reconstructed one of T's tams to allow for her greatly reduced amount of hair, and crocheted another tam from scratch. Right now I am crocheting a fedora for me and a tam for T's niece. I also have a tam lined up in my mind for someone else, once I find the yarn. I also have two more baseball caps in mind.

Can we say, "Happy hands," anyone? I knew you could.

Current mood: content.
Current music: Redemption Song ~ Bob Marley.

13th November, 2009. 4:01 pm. Meta-vignette 13: Presidential paramours

In my 13th vignette last November, I wrote about The Woman Who Wouldn't Tell. Mary Hulbert Peck was Woodrow Wilson's paramour for many years, including some when he was President. She set the gold standard for Presidential paramours, by refusing offers of considerable amounts of money and luxury goods in exchange for any letters she might have. Her involvement with the President would have remained a secret that she carried to her grave were it not for Woodrow Wilson's carefully preserved correspondence with her that became available to federal archivists in 1952 after his second wife's death.

Wilson was not the only President to have extra-marital love interests. George Washington maintained a relationship with Mary Gibbons of New Jersey from the time of his Revolutionary War service through his presidency. Thomas Jefferson quite openly maintained a household with Sally Hemmings, his black mistress, even taking her to France with him where she became a free woman the moment she stepped ashore. It's a tribute to Sally's dedication that she willingly returned to America with Jefferson. She had several offers from French dignitaries. Several other 19th century presidents are rumored to have had similar arrangements, though the records are inconclusive.

Since Woodrow Wilson's presidency we've had Warren G. Harding, who liked to knock off a mid-day quickie with his secretary, Nan Britton, in the White House broom closet. FDR also had a fairly well known affair with his secretary Missy LeHand, and for a while he was boffing Princess Marta of Norway while she was living in the White House as a refugee from WW II. JFK is reputed to have had legions of willing young women at his beck and call during his term in office. He certainly had affairs with Marilyn Monroe and Angie Dickinson, and is rumored to have also carried on with Blaze Star and Judy Campbell (while she was also the mistress of Chicago mobster, Sam Giancana!)

While Dwight D. Eisenhower was president, he played a lot of golf in Denton, Texas, the home of his wartime driver and secretary Kay Summersby. Mamie didn't go along on those golfing trips.

Then, of course, there's Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski. I trust that's a recent enough matter I don't need to go into any greater detail.

http://brownfolks.blogspot.com/2009/11/gloves-come-off-islamophobia-in-lilburn.html

Tonight in Lilburn, GA, an angry group of Islamophobes have turned on their Muslim neighbors and sought to enshrine their bigotry in law by denying a local mosque the right to expand and build a cemetery. Sadly, the city's Planning Commission sided with the angry mob.
